Mahindra SsangYong Korando Overview

The SUV segment in the auto sector is in boom and many new models are being introduced by various auto companies in India this year. The Indian auto leader Mahindra & Mahindra is also all set to launch one more SUV in the auto market. But this time the model is Korando which is based on South Korean technology.
The South Korean auto company, SsangYong is having one more powerful SUV in its kit to have a better market share.
Ssangyong has been building SUVs since the 1983 under the Korando badging and the model that is headed to India is in its fifth generation that was previewed at the 2010 Busan Motor Show. This product has been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign fame and has become quite popular in the international markets, for its aggressive body, angular design and large flared wheel arches. At the front there are the hexagonal fog lamps, the double slat grille, which accommodates the large Ssangyong badge. The headlamps are wraparound and get LED treatment. There is the large black plastic cladding all around the lower part of the body. At the back, the Korando C features dual chrome exhausts, rear spoiler and brake lights.

The interiors of the Korando are sporty yet simplistic. There is the touchscreen satellite navigation system, which can be controlled via the dials on the center console or via the steering mounted controls. On the safety front there are six airbags - dual front, side and curtain, while you also get multi-function ESP (Electronic Stability Program) brake assist, hill start assist. As you can see this is a well loaded SUV and the other features include automatically folding/unfolding mirrors, which are operated when the doors are locked/unlocked using the remote key.


Mahindra SsangYong Korando Expected Engine and Transmission Specifications

Initially, under the hood at launch is a new e-XDi200 engine making 175 PS and a peak torque of 360Nm from 2,000-3,000rpm, consuming just 6.0 liters of diesel per 100km and putting out 157g/km of CO2. The turbo diesel engine has a variable geometry turbocharger and is said to be Euro 6 compliant. It can be either had had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic, with both front wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.

The all-wheel drive systems runs on 100% front wheel power by default and only sends power to the rear wheels if needed, but 4WD mode can be locked if needed at speeds below 40km/h. Later, two other engines will be added to the mix – another smaller diesel engine and a petrol engine.

The Ssangyong Korando C will be built at its parent company Mahindra’s plant in Chakan near Pune. This will help the Indian automaker to launch the SUV at a very aggressive price, owing to almost 22 per cent localisation.
